Painted River Stones Projects

This is a fun -- and easy -- project for artists of all ages. When the stones are finished, they are beautiful in the garden, as paper weights, or as part of holiday decor. They also make great gifts.

Materials needed: Natural River Stones (these can be gathered, or purchased inexpensively in 30 lb bags at most Hardware stores), opaque paint (see below), brushes. Optional materials: paint markers, acrylic gouache.

A note about opaque paint: when covering dark surfaces such as rocks, mixing in a bit of Dick Blick's "Blockout White" into the paint makes things easy. Mix a little bit in with every color except black, and artists will be able to apply color with one coat. An alternative to this is using opaque paint pens, or Acrylic Gouache. These can all be used together.
